Kayleigh's Inspiration

Well, ya'll, I realize I'm a day late and a dollar short, but I hope you'll forgive me. I just took my last final of the summer term this morning so I can now concentrate for the next few weeks on writing and other fun things. Like the other authors, I enjoy drawing inspiration from real life personalities for my muses.

For Svetkavista:
The always delicious Stuart Townsend as Lestat inspired my Brishen. And Elizabeth Rohm as Karina.

For Leading Her to Heaven:

Who better to draw inspiration from for Blair Ruthven than Adrian Paul as Duncan Macleod?

"Unspeakable":

To play my oh-so-handsome rake Trevor Caufield, Hugh Jackman.

And I'll leave with the inspiration for two of my upcoming secret projects.

As if we writers don't suffer enough, erm, issues...

I haven't suffered writer's cramp in years, since I do the majority of my writing on the computer now. But back in the day of the ten page snailmail letters and such, I used to get hellacious writer's cramp. (That, and I'm right-handed but hold the pen or pencil like a lefty, so hypergraphic inspiration often meant lead or ink smeared to my elbow...) Nowadays, my output is significantly higher, partly due to the absence of writer's cramp, yet I suffer writer's block more frequently than I did during the pencil-n-paper days. I often joke that block is like a writer's cramp of the brain. According to this article, I may be on to something:

Writer's Cramp May Be Tied to Brain Abnormalities

Yes, as if writers aren't already fucked up enough. :P

Skyler Grey's, Personal Inspiration

When looking for characters for fill my pages, I love to have a visual in my mind to help me along. I'm so happy to get the chance to share what inspires me with you.

When I'm looking for a devious, beautifully sexy vixen to twist the plot in my stories, this picture completes my idea perfectly.

This is just simply... sexy! Washed up on a beach.... discovered by a devilishly, sexy alpha male & carried away.... yes... I'll volunteer. *Grin*

*DROOL* My ALL time most favorite of males. He's my total inspiration for what I find sexy, beautiful and all together just plain purrrr-fect!

Another fav of mine for when I'm in the mood to, kick things up a notch! *yummy*

This man's body is what I deem to be a beautiful specimen of the alpha male. Can someone point me in the direction as to where I can cast my net? ((wink))

That's "some" of my inspirations... I've lots more but... I'll save those for another time.

*hugs & smooches*

Got Harry Potter?

I got my copy of HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS last night only eighteen minutes after the clock struck midnight!

Everyone was caught up in Pottermania and I was along to experience it –for the first and last time. I became a fan of the movies just a couple of years ago and became instantly enchanted by the world J. K. Rowling has created. Now, honestly, I haven’t read the novels yet –but I will, I promise.

Just after ten on July twentieth, I decided to trek over to one of my favorite local bookstores, the BOOKS A MILLION, on Hwy 49 & 160, in Charlotte NC and experience a Potter party. It was great! Although there were other Potter parties in bookstores in the area, the one I chose had a “milder” turn-out. The staff went out of their way to make sure kids and adults were having a good time, keeping everyone happily occupied with fun stuff until it was time to form the lines for book distribution.

Sipping a small coffee, I browse the shelves, making my way past kids and parents dressed in all sorts of costumes and cool apparel from the Potter world. I love watching kids pointing their wands at each other and uttering ‘magical’ phrases with giggles and squeals of delight –thank goodness no one was actually turned into a toad or worse. *wink* I was also amused with the older ‘kids’ who chatted with me, telling me about their own experiences at previous Potter parties or about how they read one of the novels in a full day marathon.

Despite all the media hype, it seems clear that Ms. Rowling has given authors and storytellers like me a bright sense of hope for future success. People, no matter what their age, still love a good, well-told story and characters they can love and cherish to the very end.

Thx & Hugs,

Musely Inspirations:

Okay, there are many things that inspire the characters that pop into my head. But I have to admit that most of the time, I just start writing and the characters take on a face of their own inside my head. Never completely based after one particular person... but I do love to collect pics that inspire me to create heroes and heroines.

Here are some pics of the most common used male inspirations for me:

I've based more than one character on Jensen Ackles. There's just something about this guy's look and attitude that captures the heroes I envision. But most of the time, he's mixed in with a little of my own imagination, and becomes a completely different person.

Ah, Christian Bale... what's there not to like about this guy? He's got a bit of everything that once again captures what a hero should look like. I know he sets my muse's senses tingling. :)

I don't think I need to say much about Ryan Reynolds, do I? Let's just stare at the picture and let it speak for itself...

John Barrowman is well a very, very nice looking man. He was in Doctor Who and then in Torchwood - two shows that I absolutely love! He's got dimples and one of the best smiles I've ever seen! Honestly, he's becoming the basis of a lot of my heroes. Lol. He may not be straight in real life, but who cares, right?

Of course, there are other actors that have a certain look that captivates me, but I just wanted to list a few.

There are other things that inspire me too. I love to check out artwork online. I find so many inspiring images that my muse just runs with it! One artist that really gets me into the gloomy mood that dark tales require, is Victoria Frances. You can check out her website here. She really does make some beautiful, haunting work.

She inspires most of my female characters. Here's one I just had to share:

This shaggy guy is on my desktop wallpaper right now. He's really good inspiration for that vicious killer kind of writing. LOL And, this next man is an MMA fighter in the UFC but he reminds me of my werewolf...

And, when I'm writing anything Egyptianesque, this one is always helpful.

And, this picture is great for that goddess-fix...

CHARADE: Muse Times Two!

When I first began CHARADE, I decided to have two brothers with whom Dixie, protege and heroine, engages in her sexually-charged "charades". Who better to inspire the two Wilcox brothers than multi-talented actor, VIGGO MORTENSEN --one of my personal favorites. :)

Viggo as Mitchell Wilcox, the loving, yet firm benefactor of Dixie.

Viggo as Alex Wilcox, Mitchell's younger brother, artist and cocky bad-boy who also enjoys "playing" with Dixie.

Both brothers are extremely sexy, yet have different personalities as well as looks. They were such fun to write! IMHO, the Wilcox siblings have been two of my favorite male characters to date. ;)

Des' creative muses

It's hard to say who my inspirations were for my characters in Top This. For most, I didn't picture any particular celebrity.

After I wrote it however, my edit and critique partner sent me this link (partial nudity) and said that the male in this image is what she saw for the male hero of Top This. Granted the scene depicted here is nothing like Top This, but if you single out the male figure and place him as the hero, yeah, I can totally see where she is coming from. I fell in love with this as soon as I saw this link. It's almost dead on to how I saw him in my mind. I was ecstatic when she bought me a huge print of it as a Yuletide gift. Click Here

As for Trina, the closest celeb I can think to looking like her would be Alyssa Milano. Large Pic, Click Here

For Lucy, I'd say my mental image of her is Tara Reid (when she's not drunk or exposing her boobs) Large Pic, Click Here

For Deanne, the closest I can think of would be Bryce Dallas Howard. Click for pic

As for Adonis... well... I think he deserves to have "an ego the size of Ganesh's balls"

Katrina's Musely Inspirations

A picture is worth 1,000 words, or so the proverbial they say. So other than a few brief explanations, I'll let the photos speak for themselves as to which pretties have inspired the characters of my dark erotic romance series, The Eldritch Legacy.

Inga, the lead heroine of medieval fantasy Secrets Revealed, was based on Milla Jovovich, who can convey sweet and sassy equally well. (Though I had to shave a few inches off her statuesque height for the petite Inga!)

Her captor, Lord Eldritch (affectionately nicknamed "Bane" as in "Lord Bane Eldritch" by my critique circle, since he is the one Eldritch boy without a first name) was inspired by a combination of two fictional characters, with some Beauty and the Beast and Phantom of the Opera thrown in for good measure. (Hey, it was my first novel...)

Just take the angst, inner conflict, and hotness of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader:

And blend that with the cool reserve -- and hot black leather armor! -- of Captain Etienne Navarre from Ladyhawke as portrayed by Rutger Haeur:

The strong-willed, seductive Thelise was based on Gina Gershon, who like Thelise, encompasses beauty, brains, and balls all in one:

Moving on to Lessons Learned, which follows the Eldritch family into my own twisted version of the Regency/Romantic Era, who better to base rogue Byronesque poet on than tall, dark, and handsome Shane Brolly, who hails from Ireland:

And what would a Regency rake be without his fair counterpart as secondary male and best mate? Stefan's would be Beethoven-inspired Klauss Von Alstyne, whose appearance is based partly on Julian Sands circa 1995:

As for the lovely women who go toe-to-toe with my dashing Regency boys, romance novelist Camille Rocheford looks a bit like the lovely Madeline Amchick. (Some of you will recall her as the actress who portrayed waitress Shelly on Twin Peaks.

And how convenient that Asia Argento, on whom I based racy actress Nicolette Neville, starred in her father's steamy remake of Phantom of the Opera with Julian Sands:

This brings us to urban noir installment Fates Fulfilled, where we meet the Eldritch family once again in modern times. For me, it was just a given that Fairuza Balk would be the perfect inspiration for bold and sassy goth girl Marissa Blackwell-Eldritch:

This is the first time in the series where we meet an Eldritch-born girl, so I had to pair Marissa up with a man worthy of joining the gene pool and holding his own against Marissa's hot Eldritch cousin, Devon. Hence my favorite secondary character ever, Gareth Neville, who is completely inspired by every beautiful bishounen boy I've ever loved in the manga/anime genre. I felt that Cillian Murphy (yes, another hot Irishman!) captures the androgynous "bishie" aesthetic perfectly -- pretty enough to be a girl, yet undeniably male:

Picture Cillian with glasses, then give him silver Sephiroth hair (yes, silver!!!) and you have Gareth Neville.

When I penned Fates, I was on a My Chemical Romance kick. Lead singer Gerard Way really helped me get a grip on Devon Eldritch, my darkest and most conflicted character to date. That, and Devon has a penchant for wearing nice suits with snazzy ties:

Devon's love interest, fetish model Celeste Dupree, is another character inspired by more than one real-life beauty. I pictured her physical characteristics as resembling those of actress Sophia Myles:

But her funky, street chic style was wholly inspired by that of singer Gwen Stefani:

For those of you who've read the trilogy -- yes, Inga and Bane's youngest son has a book in the works. And the Muse is in luck, because Ville Valo of HIM truly, honestly, fits the physical characteristics of Trystan Eldritch to a tee. I guess when I leave off the beautiful body art, that will be my defense regarding that whole "resemblance to living persons is entirely coincidental" clause at the beginning of the book? ;)

And so there you have the pretties who've helped inspire The Eldritch Legacy. Inspirations behind characters in my other works include Dave Navarro, Rose McGowan, Marton Csokas, and Keanu Reeves, to name a few. While I don't flat out envision my characters as these people (well, with the exception of Trystan), they definitely help me get a grip on offering physical descriptions that make the characters truly come to life, for myself as the creator and, ulimately, if I've done my job right, for you as the reader. :)

SHAKESPEARE'S MACBETH IN THE BUFF???

In Arlington Virginia, the Washington Shakespeare Company got mixed reviews when they performed William Shakespeare’s play, MACBETH, in the nude.

The play’s director and cast say the production is fulfilling its artistic vision: exposing the primal nature of man's ambitions and fears.

Jose Carrasquillo, the director, said he’d read the history of the Scottish people and was inspired “to create a radically different visual presentation”.

For the full article CLICK HERE

I think the director and company did fulfill their vision. However, the article states, “an all-nude production of the Shakespearean tragedy is not for everyone.” I , for one, would be interested in seeing this production! *wink-wink*

Guess it gives new meaning to the term 'theater buff', huh?

KATHLEEN WOODIWISS

Just wanted to share with you a notice that was posted on the forumwise website that Heath Woodiwiss was kind enough to take the time and post. Kathleen has passed away 7/6/07.

"Hello. I am very sorry to inform you all of the death of my mother Kathleen. She took the death of my brother a bit harder than we thought and the cancer came back with a vengence. She passed away Friday morning at 0630 in Princeton, MN. I just want to thank you all for all of your support and being such great fans. My Mom was amazed at all of the people that supported her. Her final book is done, but not finished. We will be trying to polish it up for her. Her editor at Harper Collins has been a great source of stress for my Mom and the rest of us as well, so I am not sure how that will work out, but we are trying to get the book published as fast as possible. We all want this to be her greatest book ever. Thank you again for all of your support.

Heath."

Kathleen Woodiwiss was well-known for her historical romances since the 1980s. She was a favorite author of my late mother. My Mom's favorite title was SHANNA. I fondly remember Ms. Woodiwiss' books sitting on the nightstand beside my mother's bed and I, being a nosy teen, would sneak peeks at "the good parts" of those books. Naughty me, huh???

My sincerest condolences to the Woodiwiss family --

Only in my dreams...

I often dream about my characters. When I'm drafting or editing, I work out plot points in my sleep. When the manu is complete, my characters come back to visit me.

Then there are the anachronistic scenarios -- like the one where the lead male and female of my medieval fantasy, Secrets Revealed, were riding together on horseback, searching in vain for an outlet to power the laptop she cradled in her arms...

Favorite Movies, huh?

I've gotta say, I'm a heavy chick movie fan myself. Seems like I might be the only one around here, but there is definitely something to be said for older classics like Ghost and Beaches. I love everything about them! I like their soundtracks, their actors, the way they make me cry at the end... I could go on about it all day.

But lucky for you all, I won't. ;)

Of course, I'm a bit deeper than just a chick movie fan. I mean, come on, I like old Disney movies as well! :D Yeah, I'm really proving myself as a mature adult here, I can see that. Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, all great favorites of mine, and don't even start saying that they portray women badly, because I know that, and I like them and grew up with them anyway.

Oh, something that might redeem me, I also LOVE watching Labyrinth. It doesn't matter how many times I watched this movie on my stomach in the living room of my best friend's house when I was in Grade 3, or whether it's on a crappy video quality, or anything, Bowie (and his crotch!) shine right though it! There's music, there's dancing, there's romance, I mean, what's not to like?

And that pretty much sums me up, actually. *grins*

Movies, movies, movies!

Okay, I love watching movies and have watched a lot that I consider excellent. So I'm going to mention a few that I absolutely loved and somehow affected my life personally.

I'm going to start with the original STAR WARS trilogy. Though I also loved episode I-III, the original trilogy blew me away as a kid. I went to see the first one at the movies and was very young, but the impression it left on me was incredible. I loved and enjoyed everything about it. I even wanted to be Leia when I grew up. She was so strong and proud... I think we all wanted to be her when we were kids. Lol.

There's something magical about that first movie that George Lucas captured in all three. I still feel that way when I watch them now. It's something that grabbed a hold of me when I was five and has remained. I love that about Star Wars. No matter what age I am, I'll always feel that sense of magic about these movies.

The next one is THE LOST BOYS. OMG! I wasn't allowed to go see this one at the movies, and remember been pissed off about it too. It looked fantastic! But it all worked out in the end, because when it was released on VHS, I watched it a thousand times. I kid you not. I would get home, do my homework and stick the movie in... almost every single day. No wonder I'm obsessed with vampires. ;)

This movie was one of my teenage obsessions and I blame it for my fascination with the paranormal. Lol.

Next... oh, gosh, NIGHTBREED! What can I say about this movie except that it's brilliant? My gosh. This was one of the first movies I was actually allowed to go to see by myself with a bunch of friends, so that alone was exciting. We didn't know what to watch and someone suggested this movie... I hadn't heard anything about it, but when I saw the poster, I said: hell yeah!

And boy, this movie introduced me to the brilliance that is Clive Barker. I went out and got the book right away. Then got hooked on every other tale he's ever released.

Nightbreed was fascinating, and very visceral. It pushes the boundaries of the viewer's comfort level, that's for sure. But I was captivated...

Between The Lost Boys and Nightbreed, my personal writing preference was sealed.

Oh, and before I go, I just want to mention a movie that I watched earlier this week, which was absolutely outstanding. It's TRANSFORMERS! OMG. This was fantastic. I'm so glad that they waited until the technology was worthy to make this movie. Man, it captured everything that was terrific about the 80s TV show, and added a spin from today's society that young and old can relate to. Man, if you have to watch only one movie this summer (of course, it's winter here in Australia) it has to be Transformers! It was a blast... on so many levels!

My First R-Rated Movie

FOOD FIGHT!
John Belushi in a scene from National Lampoon's ANIMAL HOUSE (1978)

Okay, I know the blog topic is ‘Our Favorite Movie’, but since I’m a BIG movie-buff, it’s hard to choose just one. So, I’d like to share with you my first R-rated movie: National Lampoon’s ANIMAL HOUSE starring John Belushi, Tim Matheson, Karen Allen, Donald Sutherland and a cast of crazy frat brothers that’ll leave your sides hurting from laughing so darn hard!

This 1978 comedy is a classic, IMHO. My parents brought it home on Beta video cassette (yes, Beta, folks) when I was about fourteen. After begging with my Mom and Dad to let me see it, they finally gave in. And so, ANIMAL HOUSE was the first R-rated movie I was allowed to see and watched it with my mother.

I recently purchased the anniversary ‘Double Secret Probation’ edition on DVD for $9.99 –and it’s as funny now as it was then! ANIMAL HOUSE holds a special place in my heart and a special place on my movie shelf too.

So, what was YOUR first R-Rated movie???

Dracula's Castle For Sale

For 135 million dollars Dracula’s castle can be yours! Yes, a Habsburg heir has put the landmark castle up for sale!

Perched on a cliff near Brasov in mountainous central Romania, the medieval Bran Castle is a top tourist attraction because of its ties to Prince Vlad the Impaler, the warlord whose cruelty inspired Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, DRACULA.

Built in the 14th century and restored in the 1980s, it is currently owned by New York architect Archduke Dominic Habsburg. Habsburg, now 69, has put the castle up for sale "to the right purchaser under the right circumstances,” says Michael Gardner, chief executive of Baytree Capital, the company representing Habsburg.

Gardner predicted the castle would sell for more than $135 million but added that Habsburg will only sell it to a buyer "who will treat the property and its history with appropriate respect."

Habsburg said in a statement: "Aside from the castle's connection to one of the most famous novels ever written, Bran Castle is steeped in critical events of European history dating from the 14th century to the present."

I don’t know about you, but I won’t mind living in Romania--if I had $135 million to spare and an internet connection! *wink*
